Sylvia Sánchez Montoya - COLOMBIA/FRANCE
“Franco-Colombian artist based in Mallorca. Trained as a designer, Sylvia is also a creative director, curator, and weaver. Her work sits at the intersection of art, design, and craft.
Her practice centers on sensitivity and perception, exploring the silent language of things and the intrinsic value of material culture. With over 20 years of experience in the creative industries—particularly in fashion and luxury—Sylvia now leads a multidisciplinary studio where she develops her own work (Moiras series) and collaborates with other artists and brands.
In homage to the weaver goddesses of fate in Greek mythology, the Moiras series is a traveling project of woven sculptures created with materials sourced from the various places where Sylvia works. For example, Moiras Series 1 was made in Mallorca using hand-spun virgin wool and organic cotton cords, while Moiras Serie Colombia was crafted with raw silk and banana fiber (calceta de plátano).
The foundation of each Moira includes a strand from the previous one, establishing a continuous thread of connection throughout the series. Their open weave—without weft or closure—suggests a vertical movement linking the celestial and the terrestrial. Their volumes shape spaces within space, opening dialogues between inside and outside, the personal and the universal.
The Moiras are both witnesses to and vessels of time. They invite us to touch them, move through them, and inhabit them. It is through this interaction that the pieces are truly completed. They breathe, swell, curl, tangle, fray, and degrade—becoming more beautiful and more alive as they age.
With Moiras, Sylvia opens a new chapter in her exploration of the phenomenon of design, positioning the object at the threshold between art and an experience that is both performative and spiritual.”
