XTANT in Mallorca is a global gathering of all the wonderfully different strands of textiles and artisanry. A ‘best of’ collection of all which we can get a hold of carefully arranged for the world to see. But while it can bring pieces of those worlds to people who’d otherwise never see them, it has to limit itself only to pieces.
Artisan craft is defined by the labour, the materials, the history, and culture that come together in its production; it stands apart from industry because of its uniqueness and its lack of replicability, but that is also why it's so difficult to capture its full complexity. While it's easy to carry the products and marvel at their craftsmanship a thousand miles away, have the tactile experience; the connection to the producers, to the land, the flora, the villages, the cultural signifiers, and the food — these things which are integral to the craft process — cannot travel on a plane.
But, we can travel to them.

XTANT draws a fair share of visitors from across the globe looking to browse through and be inspired by these windows into the many artisan and craft cultures of our world, for YATRA we wanted to give our community the opportunity to delve deep and experience their worlds for themselves.
LOCATION
VANKAR VISHRAM VALJI (VVV) in Bhuj.
The location may sound familiar, as it is the town in which great friends of the project the world renown Vankar weaver community have lived in for over five hundred years.
Located in the western side of the subcontinent, between Gujarat and Karachi, Kutch sits at the epicentre of a biblical compendium’s worth of different textile and artisanal traditions from times prior to industrial capital. When the craftsmanship of Indian textiles made them the most coveted in the world. And, honouring these traditions, weavers, artisans, and master craftspeople still maintain them, keeping them alive and evolving even as demand went the way of the neighbouring polluting factories on the Indus and Ganges rivers.
And it's in that stark contrast that that the true beauty of the social, historic, and community roots of these ancient craft traditions truly shine.
