“Jolanda Linssen is a Rotterdam-based multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice investigates the expressive and conceptual potential of textiles in dialogue with painting, drawing, and ceramics. She obtained her Master of Fine Arts degree from the PietZwart Institute, Rotterdam, in 1997, following her 1995 qualification as a first-degree teacher of drawing, painting, and printmaking from the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht.
Since 1997, Linssen has developed an extensive and diverse body of work. Her practice encompasses painting, ceramics, printmaking, drawing, papier-mâché, mixed media, and installation art. From 2020 onward, textile has assumed a central role in her work, incorporating both traditional craft techniques and experimental processes. She frequently employs felt, wool, and reclaimed textiles, often in combination with ceramics and wood, resulting in tactile, materially layered works with strong narrative dimensions.
In 2020, Linssen initiated VRIENDJE(Dutch for “dear friend”), an ongoing project comprising hand-crafted cardigans, sculptures, and tapestries. This project explores themes of connection, memory, care, and sustainability through textile-based forms and processes.
Her engagement with textile art also extends to large-scale commissions. In 2021, she received funding to design a monumental wall tapestry for a primary school in Rotterdam. The work was produced in collaboration with an artisan weaving studio in Morocco and installed in 2022 as a long-term loan. In 2024, she secured additional funding for a subsequent tapestry project, scheduled for completion in the summer of 2026.
Alongside her studio practice, Linssen has been active as an independent art educator since 1998, teaching drawing, painting, and printmaking to children, students, and adults. Her textile works, paintings, and sculptures are included in private collections and in the collection of De Kunstuitleen Rotterdam. Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In the summer of 2024, Vriendje XXIwas exhibited at the BIEN Contemporary Textile Art Biennial in Slovenia”
