Tie Dye 'Bandhani' (બાંધણી) with Master Abdullah Khatri

€150.00

Bandhani (બાંધણી) meaning “binding” or “to tie” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Bandha”, and usually refers to a traditional dyeing method indigenous to Gujrat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in North-western India.

Fabric is tightly tied together, then plucked with ones fingernails in tiny pinches to create floral or figurative patterns that are finally dyed into each piece with colours derived from natural dye-making. For each and every pattern, one of many different methods of fabric tying is utilised, resulting in a unique product.

The tied sections retain their base color whilst the remaining portions of the fabric, are steeped and dyed into beautiful patterns, in a process slightly similar to Shibori, a dying technique from Japan.

Over the course of this Workshop, participants will learn from a selection of Bandhani tie-dyed, or shell dyed patterns; being guided through the process step by step as they produce a scarf of their own in one of the many different patterns.

The workshop duration is around three hours total.

No prior experience is required.

All materials used will be provided for during the workshop.
