DE LA ESPADA - PORTUGAL
“At their workshop on Portugal's Silver Coast, De La Espada combines artisanal furniture making savoir faire with rigorous, research-based contemporary design. Their portfolio of iconic and timeless furniture includes designs by their in-house design studio, De La Espada Atelier, and by great figures in the world of international design including Neri&Hu, Manuel Aires Mateus, and Luca Nichetto, among others.
Their solar-powered workshop specialises in woodworking and upholstery, and they also collaborate with artisans whose craft they highlight in their products. In the world of weaving and textiles, De La Espada collaborates with Fabricaal, a Monsaraz-based workshop specialising in mantas alentejanas — Portuguese blankets hand woven on manual looms; Flores Textile Studio, a Lisbon-based interior design studio and textile showroom that works closely with local textile artisans; Isabelle Ormieres, who hand-dyes fabrics at her studio in Paris; and Catarina Riccabona, a London-based textile artist.
Reflected within each De La Espada product is a reverence for the natural beauty of noble materials, a deep commitment to heritage, and the pursuit of experimentation; an engineering of past and future. Each partner contributes to the brand’s design language, shaping a world that has become distinctively its own—interdisciplinary, contemplative, and culturally enriched.
De La Espada is deeply committed to preserving Portugal’s ancestral techniques while seeking to redefine their relevance in a contemporary context. Their cultural inquiry into craft extends beyond furniture; they actively invest in initiatives like Passa Ao Futuro, a non-profit dedicated to the preservation and innovation of artisanal craft; Lisbon Design Week and Lisbon by Design, helping to bring together makers, designers, craftspeople and other firms interested in design thinking; and recently opened Galeria De La Espada, a gallery in Porto dedicated to contemporary craft.
De La Espada sits at the heart of design and craft in Portugal and represents true luxury: creativity rather than imitation; extensive research and development; traditional methods that are in scarce supply; a singular aesthetic point-of-view; and no compromise when it comes to materials or effort.”
