Rosa Pomar

Rosa Pomar is a Portuguese researcher, artisan and designer with a background in Medieval History studies. Raised between Lisbon and the Portuguese countryside, she has always been in close contact with both artisans and artist.

For over fifteen years Rosa has devoted herself to Portuguese wool.

Her work in textiles, starting off as a personal calling to research and document Portugal’s wool-related heritage, evolved into a multifaceted project focused on designing and developing a traceable progress in sheep-to-skein yarn for natively portuguese sheep breeds

In turn, bringing awareness to the imminent extinction of many breeds of sheep as well as the manifold practices that they'd leave in their wake.

Portugal, like many other countries, has a shockingly monumental amount of discarded wool. Fibres once revered and considered a precious source of income, quickly falling to the wayside as softer and cheaper alternatives flooded its markets.

Rosa’s yarns and designs deprioritize softness in favour of qualities such as durability, traceability and a reduced ecological footprint. Their success further proves that successful, high quality products do not require the atypical and somewhat absurd price and characteristic standards put on fibres The project, Inspiring several to mirror its practice in other European countries.
